Lawsuit Filed Against Texas School District to Stop Prayer During Graduation
Summary: This article discusses a federal lawsuit that was filed on Friday by Americans United for Separation of Church and State. It was filed on behalf of a Mr. and Mrs. Schultz against a Texas school district to prevent them from having prayer at graduation. The Schultz's have three children attending schools in the district, and say their son might not attend his own graduation this year if they pray. The Schultz family says they are agnostic. The group wants the student-led invocation and benediction removed from the commencement as they say it violates the separation of church and state. However, the school insists that it does not violate any laws or school policy. This lawsuit seems to be an attention grabber. The Schultz family seems to be in need of some media attention because their grounds for filing seem to be a little ridiculous. Granted, there may be a controversy because it is public funded school, but the involvement of the family seems to be only an attention grabber and not worth the attention it is getting.
The Core Biblical Truth for this article is the one on sin. It says, "Mankind is totally depraved and his sinful nature can be seen throughout history. Law and government were established to restrain this depravity in the governors as well as the governed." This applies because if mankind were not sinful, everyone would acknowledge Christ as Lord and there would be no need for separation of church and state, and therefore no basis for this ridiculous lawsuit.
Obviously, because of my bias, I take the side of the school district.
ReplyDeleteIf the majority is ok with the prayer, then let them pray. One doesn't have to pray along with them, they can just close their eyes in respect of other's beliefs. You don't have to sacrifice your beliefs to respect the belief of others.
I don't see why the Schultz are filing a lawsuit seeing that they are agnostic, if they were atheist it would make a little more sense...
However, I will say that when prayer was taken out of public schools, Christians felt threatened. Maybe it is the same for these people.
It's just kind of funny thought when many people point their finger at Christians saying that they are intolerant, when in reality, they are the intolerant ones.
Must I say that this isn't unexpected at all? It is a common trend nowadays in public schools to get rid of any form of religion. As if teaching a set of morals is bad for children's health, ego, and self-respect. In any case, I am rather disappointed that people keep on trying this and that is all I have to say for now.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't surprising, but nonetheless, it is still quite sad. The fact that a family would go this far to avoid prayer at a graduation is disheartening to hear. Pretty soon religion will be a huge taboo in public schools, and will no longer be accepted.
